What does it cost to Update: Bedroom

Have you ever wondered what it really costs to furnish a guest bedroom these days? Or found yourself searching for updated information on pricing? You’re not alone!

We’ve noticed that prices have shifted quite a bit across most categories. With all the changes in the world, we figured it was time to update our estimates so you know what to expect when creating a cozy and welcoming space.

Even though costs have evolved, the essentials of choosing the right furniture and textiles still hold strong! Scroll down for a breakdown of today’s prices and key tips to help you design the perfect bedroom.

Furniture & Retailers Overview

We’ve broken down the pricing into three categories, using specific retailers for context. Of course, your mileage may vary based on your specific needs, sizing, and materials.

  • Economy options: Target, Wayfair

  • Mid-range options: Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Brooklinen

  • High-end options: RH, Lulu & Georgia, Citizenry, and boutique stores like McGee & Co or Magnolia Market.

Remember, just because something is labeled 'high-end' doesn’t always guarantee the highest quality—be sure to pay attention to materials, construction, and customer service before making a final decision.

BED

When selecting a bed, consider whether it needs built-in storage to save space. Should you go with an upholstered bed, or would a wood or metal frame suit your room better? Maybe even a canopy bed for a bit of flair? These choices can greatly influence the price. Since the bed is likely to last through the life of the room, it’s often worth investing in something durable and stylish.

BEDDING & PILLOWS

Bedding is a highly personal choice with many material options—think percale, sateen, linen, bamboo, or even silk. We recommend opting for easy-to-wash fabrics for guests. If you love the clean look of white bedding like we do, keep in mind that it can always be bleached, while colored bedding can’t!

Your bedding layers will also impact the cost. Do you prefer just a duvet and blanket, or would you add a quilt and a throw blanket for extra comfort? It’s all about how much effort your guests will want to put into making their beds—or not, no judgment!

The same applies to pillows. Are you after hand-printed, artisanal designs or factory-produced options? Are the inserts polyester or down-filled? These decisions can significantly influence your overall spend.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Window treatments often get overlooked, but they can really complete a room by balancing light and privacy. Ready-made curtain panels and basic curtain rods will keep costs lower, while custom-made treatments or layered blackout and decorative curtains can add up. Adding shades? That’ll raise the price, too. If the guest room doesn’t quite feel finished, this is one area to consider upgrading!

RUG

Adding a rug is a lovely touch, especially in non-carpeted rooms, giving your guests something soft underfoot when they wake up. Our detailed post on rug materials covers everything you need to know about what goes into construction—grab a cup of coffee before diving in, we didn’t skimp on the details!

LIGHTING

Lighting has a wide price range, from handblown, custom-made fixtures to mass-produced lamps. When it comes to guest rooms, you can have fun with lighting—whether it’s a quirky chandelier or a bold lamp, lighting can add character to the space. Strike a balance between function and style to make sure your lighting choices fit both your aesthetic and budget.

NIGHTSTANDS & DRESSERS

When shopping for nightstands and dressers, the materials you choose will greatly impact your cost. Are you going for marble, hardwood, or metal? Will the storage include soft-close drawers? What kind of hardware are you selecting? The type of construction and the materials used are major factors in determining the price.

ART & ACCESSORIES

You don’t need to go overboard with accessories in a guest room, but the quality of the pieces can vary dramatically. Artisan and handcrafted items will cost more due to the time and creativity involved, but they add a unique, personal touch to the space. Whether it’s a large statement piece or something small, consider your budget and the impact you want each piece to have in the room.
